There aren’t many ways for a golfer to get the chance to play Augusta National. On Thursday, amateur Anna Davis missed out on one of them in the most painstaking way.

During the second round of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur at Champions Retreat, Davis was handed a slow-play penalty on the 17th hole and subsequently missed the cut by one stroke. Only players who made the 36-hole cut at the prestigious event will play the third and final round at the famed site of next week’s Masters Tournament.

Davis has played Augusta National before, winning the event in 2022.

After the penalty, Davis carded a 6-over 78 for a two-day total of 4 over, one shot outside of the cutline.

The following statement was released by the tournament committee: “Anna Davis was assessed a one-stroke penalty for violation of the tournament’s pace of play policy. Her group, which included Lottie Woad and Maria Jose Marin, was notified that they were out of position multiple times during their second round. While being timed, Davis received her first bad time after playing her second stroke on hole No. 5 and received her second bad time following her second stroke on hole No. 17. She was subsequently assessed a one-stroke penalty, which was applied on hole No. 17.”

It was not the first time Davis had run into a rules issue at the Augusta Women’s Amateur. Last year, playing as defending champ in wet conditions, Davis was assessed two separate two-stroke penalties for mistakenly playing lift, clean, and place rules from the rough when players were only allowed to clean their balls in the fairway.

The Golf Channel’s Brentley Romine reported on Thursday that Davis wasn’t ready to talk about the incident after her round and that her coach described her as “heartbroken.”

The final round of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur is Saturday.
