Andy Murray vs Jordan Thompson LIVE: Queen’s tennis latest as Brit pulls out of tournament with injury

Thompson was asked about a previous meeting between him and Murray back in 2017, he said: “It could be my best tennis memory. I was a lot younger then, he was world No 1, I was a lucky loser, and I came and took him out in straight sets. Not many guys on the tour get to play world No 1, alone beat them. So it was definitely on my mind and I couldn’t wait to get out there again. Honestly, I don’t say that too often about a tennis match anymore. I’m really looking forward to it. But today I was really looking forward to that.”

The injury affecting Murray has now been confirmed to be a back injury.

When asked what he was trying to do, the Australian said: Hit the ball in and make him run. I actually learned that from him when he was playing and if a guy was hurt or cramping or something, he’d always use a drop shot or just try and take it up the line. I thought ‘I just need to make him move’. I guess that’s the benefit of me being a lot younger than him and watching him play. I learned a lot of things watching him play, so it’s an honour to share the court with him, but it’s just sad that it ended like that.

“In any other sport, if someone was hurt I don’t think the opponent would let up at all. It’s nothing personal, just trying to get the job done.”

Andy Murray retired from his second-round match at Queen’s Club on Wednesday, plunging his participation at his final Wimbledon Championships in doubt.

The 37-year-old was hobbling throughout the warm-up and it was clear from the start, when he could barely move from the baseline after serving, that the five-time champion was not in any condition to compete with Australian opponent Jordan Thompson.

After three games he took a medical timeout, with a physio working on metal right hip, and Murray valiantly continued to play on until the change-of-ends after the fifth game.

Just taking a look back at the footage and Murray looked uncomfortable even coming out of the locker room.

Although it is unlikely he was struggling with it during his warm up ahead of the match, and there were no signs of it in his gritty win yesterday.

Queen’s are bidding farewell to the tennis player who has won this tournament five times. It’s not how he would want to go out, but the injury seemed to be bothering him too much to continue.

Murray has the trainer back on and I think the discussion will be about whether he chooses to keep going in this match or not.

I think he has called it. The crowd will be disappointed, he will be disappointed his family are all there, but there was just no way he could keep going.

Murray has missed two shots, straight into the net on his serve and is in danger of being broken again.

He manages to pull it back to 15-30, but double-faults and gives Thompson two break points, which he only needs one of with a second double fault.

Murray is cheered by all sections of the crowd as he gets up and gets back on his feet, but the first shot he has to hit is very wayward and he looks uncomfortable.

Thompson is playing with this now, he plays a drop shot that Murray tries to get to but clearly doesn’t want to push too hard.

Thompson quickly establishes a 40-0 lead, Murray gets a point with a well-timed backhand return.

Thompson takes the game, Murray does come to the net and makes a shot but has to hop on the spot in pain when he gets there.
