Braugher was best known for his role as Captain Raymond Holt on the police comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which ran from 2013 to 2021.
His performance garnered him two Critics Choice Awards for best actor in a comedy series and four Emmy nominations.
Braugher was a huge fan favourite, with his comedic timing as he played off against Andy Samberg’s Detective Jake Peralta a highlight of the show.
The Chicago-born actor graduated from Stanford University before attending Julliard’s drama division.
His career was kickstarted by an appearance in the 1989 war thriller Glory, alongside Matthew Broderick and Denzel Washington.
His other credits include the TV movie revival of the hit 70s show Kojak, Law and Order: SVU, and Homicide: Life on the Street, for which he won an Emmy award in his role as Frank Pembleton.
He also won an Emmy for his performance in the TV series Thief (2006).
Speaking to Variety at the height of the Black Lives Matter movement, the actor talked about the complexities of playing a police officer.
“Cops breaking the law to quote, ‘defend the law,’ is a real terrible slippery slope,” he said.
“It has given licence to the breaking of law everywhere, justified it and excused it.
“That’s something that we’re going to have to collectively address — all cop shows.”
His most recent role was in the drama film She Said, playing New York Times executive editor Dean Banquet, who oversaw the journalists reporting on Harvey Weinstein and the #MeToo movement.
Braugher is survived by his wife and fellow actress Ami Brabson, whom he met on the set of Homicide: Life on the Street, and their three sons.
