On Sunday, an unexpected hero helped Manchester United pull off an exhilarating upset against Liverpool.
Tied at 3-3, Manchester United forward Amad Diallo nailed the winning goal in the 121st minute of the match, sending the Red Devils to the Emirates FA Cup Semifinals, where they’ll face Coventry City.
The big goal could be a turning point for the 21-year-old. Diallo suffered a knee injury in preseason and was sidelined until December. As a result, his playing time dwindled. However, Dan Sheldon of The Athletic noted Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag should give him more opportunities after he stepped up in a critical moment.
Liverpool (19-7-2), meanwhile, missed out on capturing its fourth FA Cup under manager Jurgen Klopp, who recently announced this would be his last season with the club. The Reds are still in a good position, though, as they’re second in the English Premier League.
Manchester United (15-2-11) is sixth in the EPL but could capitalize off of the momentum if it wins the FA cup.
“This season has not been at the level we want, but we want to improve,” United captain Bruno Fernandes told ITV, per ESPN.com. “We have always said our goal was to get into the top four and try to win the FA Cup, we will do all we can for those goals. The FA Cup is a big trophy for this club.”
