An ALDI customer has spoken out after she was charged a different price for ripe bananas by a cashier at her local store.
Sharing on a popular Facebook group, the shopper explained that she had selected several green bananas as well as some ripe, yellow ones before heading to the checkout.
After looking at the fruits on the conveyor belt, the ALDI worker separated the different coloured bananas – charging one price for the green ones, and a different price for the yellow ones.

When the customer queried the charge, the cashier stated that she was charging more for some of the bananas because they’re a different variety – but later agreed to a refund.
The shopper also shared photos of the receipts from the transactions to prove her claims.
7NEWS.com.au understands that ALDI stores in Queensland sell two different varieties of bananas – Cavendish and Havana – that look similar, but have different price points.
The two varieties are meant to be merchandised separately in store with a sticker on the Havana bananas so they can be identified.
However, in their post, the shopper claimed that the two varieties of bananas were grouped together at his local store.
“Got lowkey suggested I was a dodgy customer today,” she wrote on the Aldi Fans Australia Facebook page.
“I did my usual behaviour … I went to the bananas and picked out some incredibly green looking ones and also some more yellow ones (almost everything was green at the main spot) and on I went with my shopping.
“Go to pay and the cashier removes the yellow bananas and charges me differently for yellow vs green.
“I stewed internally for a moment then asked why she charged them separately. She said oh the green bananas are smaller so they’re (can’t remember name) named banana and the slightly more yellow are Cavendish.
“I was like, ‘Huh? But I got them from the same table?’ She’s like, ‘Fine, I’ll refund you – but next time they’ll be priced differently.’
“I was like WTF? Refund was $3 something, but I literally just chose them based on how they’ll ripen and that they’re mainly for a five-year-old so I don’t need giant bananas.”
‘Doing something dodgy’
The shopper went on to say that she was offended by how she was treated at the checkout.
“They need to put stickers on their bananas or something if they’re going to charge based on visual alleged size because I was utterly baffled,” he said.
“I didn’t even know they sold smaller bananas but I sure do love having it alleged to me that I’m doing something dodgy.
“Please note, they weren’t Lady Finger nor did she use the word Lady Finger, she said some other banana name starting with ‘C’.
“Also I kinda panic when unexpected situations arise so it seems the type was “hav” banana. At the time they just sounded similar but unknown to me.”
The shopper’s post attracted a heated response online, with many saying they had no idea ALDI stocked different varieties of bananas.
“Ex-ALDI employee, they only stock one type of loose bananas and one in bags – I have no idea what that employee was going on about,” a former worker said.
Another added: “Wow this is just bizarre!”
A third wrote: “I’ll take notice next time. I always get half green and half yellow thinking they are the same price.”
One more responded: “What in the hell, I used to work at ALDI and this was not a thing.”
Said another: “Wow I will check next time as I try and get different stages of ripening.”
However, another ALDI employee said she was aware of the different varieties on offer in Queensland stores.
“She was probably just confused. We have recently sold three different types of bananas: Cavendish, Lady Finger and Havana. And that’s just in Queensland,” she said.
“I know other states have others and staff transfer between regions often. I’d just let her manager know.”
Another said: “Good post to notify others to check if there are two types of bananas at their store.
“Some of the comments here are shockingly judgemental of the cashier. Clearly there are two prices for two different types of bananas, and she gave a full refund.”
