AFL captain Max Gawn backs in British rock band Mumford & Sons for grand final entertainment

Melbourne’s superstar captain Max Gawn has shared his thoughts on who the AFL should track down for its grand final entertainment showpiece, calling out five “realistic options” in order of 5-1.

The decision is always a hot topic, and the AFL has come up trumps over the past two seasons with veteran rockers KISS lighting up the MCG in 2023 and Robbie Williams wowing the AFL world with a spectacular performance in 2022.

Of course, there have been a few flops along the way, too, with Bat of of Hell singer Meat Loaf spectacularly bombing in 2011, and The Black Eyed Peas accused of phoning it in for the 2018 grand final.

Speaking on Triple M’s Marty Sheargold Show, Gawn has now gone public with his top five picks for the GF entertainment

“So, this is realistic options for grand final entertainment,” Gawn said.

“(No.5) is Foo Fighters. They get played every half an hour on this (radio) station. I think it’s realistic, they come to Australia every two years.

“(No.4) is Coldplay. I think that’s really realistic … someone should send them a text. I love Coldplay.

“Three is realistic – but not as good as Coldplay or Foo Fighters. A trio of house music from back in the day – PNAU, MGMT, and Empire of the Sun. Like when the R&B trio did the Superbowl.

“Two is Rüfüs Du Sol. They can play a nice show. It’s realistic.”

But Gawn then showed his true colours when naming the No.1 band that he’d liked to see and it’s a London rock/folk band Mumford & Sons.

“No.1 is Mumford and Sons. Simply because it’s the best live act I have ever seen. Unbelievable,” Gawn said.

Mumford & Sons shot to prominence in 2012 with their blockbuster album Babel that featured the mega-hit I Will Wait.

The band’s combination of folk and rock is quite distinct, and their driving wall of sound that features electric and acoustic (including banjo and mandolin) guitar is iconic.

Little Lion Man from their first album Sigh No More in 2009 was also a massive hit and remains incredibly popular.
