Haas, 46, spoke only to gun 7NEWS reporter Rachel Baxter.

It is the first time anyone has heard directly from the alleged smuggler after 7NEWS was granted special access to speak to him for a few minutes at the door of his prison cell.

Due to strict laws in the Philippines, Seven cameras weren’t allowed to film the prisoner.

“But I did ask him how the conditions were … as you can imagine, they’re very basic,” Baxter said.

In a chilling reminder of the fate that could await him, Baxter revealed that Haas’s cell “is right next to a firing range … where police were practising using their weapons”.

Baxter said there was no electricity in the cell and there were “very limited” amenities.

“Jokingly he said it makes Australian prisons look like 7-star hotels,” she said.

Gregor Haas told Baxter he was trying to stay positive.

“He asked me if he could send a message to his son, Payne, and tell him that he loves him and that he is sorry,” Baxter said.

“No one in his immediate family has been in touch with him or has been here to see him which makes me think we may be very well the last people to see him here the Philippines before he is deported to Indonesia.”

Gregor Haas has been charged with trafficking 5kg of crystal methamphetamine from Mexico into Indonesia.

He was arrested in Cebu City last Wednesday and the Head of the Public Relations and Protocol Bureau of Indonesia’s National Narcotics Board General Sulistyo Pudjo Hartono said authorities had been tracking him since December last year.

“And he is alleged to have connections with the notorious Sinaloa Cartel drug cartel that used to be headed by one of the world’s most notorious smugglers ‘El Chappo’ (Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán),” Baxter said.

Haas does not know when he will be deported to Jakarta but he does have legal representation in Australia.

His lawyers have told 7NEWS that he will be fighting all the charges.

Baxter said the prisoner did seem reasonably jovial despite his situation.
