Hacker installs ChatGPT on calculator as 'ultimate cheating device'

(NewsNation) — Millennials may remember the TI-84 graphing calculator in grade school, and Gen Zers may know ChatGPT. One YouTuber discovered the best of both worlds when he hacked a calculator to create the “ultimate cheating device.”

YouTube creator “ChromaLock” published a viral how-to video on hacking a TI-84 graphing calculator with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. With over 1 million views, the video gives step-by-step instructions on how to install the artificial intelligence software onto the calculator using several small electronic components, including a WiFi-enabled microcontroller.

ChromaLock, whose page is dedicated to exploring coding and electronics projects, tests his new gadget in the video by connecting to his phone’s WiFi hotspot while riding around in a car. The calculator uses WiFi to connect to the internet, which then allows the ChatGPT function to operate.

The creator types questions into the calculator using the numerical keypad: “What is X + Y?” and “What is the powerhouse of the cell?” ChatGPT provides the answers almost immediately, which is a benefit to some who may use this function in nefarious ways like cheating on a test.

Although ChromaLock titles the video “I Made the Ultimate Cheating Device,” also calling it “undetectable” and “ethically dubious,” he flashes a disclaimer on the screen that he does not encourage academic dishonesty.

Other functions the hacker modified include image uploading and browsing, gaming apps and a chatroom to communicate with others. There is also a camera function, which the video maker does not discuss but instead teases to a future video.
