MANILA, Philippines—Far Eastern University rookie Veejay Pre doesn’t have many reasons to smile with the Tamaraws still winless through four games in the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament.
But Pre couldn’t help but gush after drawing praise from Ateneo coach Tab Baldwin.

“Of course I’m happy. This is coach Tab we’re talking about,” said a beaming Pre in Filipino on Sunday following FEU’s 69-58 loss to University of the Philippines at Mall of Asia Arena. “It’s fun to be talked about like that but I’m not content because we still haven’t won a game.”
“I’m happy to get the attention of coach Tab even if I’m missing shots. Coach Sean (Chambers) told me to keep shooting because they’ll go in eventually,” added Pre, who’s shooting just 37 percent from the field.

Despite the need to work on his efficiency, Pre is off to a promising start in his collegiate career. Coming into the game against the Fighting Maroons, Pre was the second-leading scorer for the Tamaraws averaging 12 points a game just behind Jorick Bautista (12.3). He is also averaging 7.7 rebounds per outing.

Pre had 10 points, two rebounds and two assists against UP (4-0), which remained the only undefeated team this season after defending champion La Salle was stunned by University of the East in the second game.
His play has caught the attention of Baldwin, whose team has FEU coming up on its calendar.

“[He’s a] very talented player, very confident,” said Baldwin, referring to Pre, on Saturday following the Blue Eagles’ 60-51 win over the Adamson Falcons on Saturday.
“I like the way that he’s not fazed by his own success or failure. He misses a few shots but keeps shooting. He’s very aggressive and determined. He’s got a great future.”
After steering Ateneo to its first win of the season, Baldwin knows how tricky it is to play against a team with a sense of urgency.
“They’re capable, they have some pretty good young talents and they’re desperate to win, they want to get that same feeling we had tonight,” he said.
FEU, though, takes on La Salle first on Wednesday before clashing with Ateneon on Sunday.
Pre is looking forward to facing reigning MVP Kevin Quiambao, who will be extra motivated to play against the Tamaraws following the Green Archers’ disappointing 75-71 defeat against the Red Warriors.

“Even if we’re underdogs, we’ll fight. Kevin Quiambao, my idol, is there and I’m excited to face him. I’ll really prepare for that,” said the budding rookie.
