Denmark’s Queen Margrethe in hospital after fall at her summer residence

Danish Queen Margrethe is in hospital following a fall at her summer residence, a palace spokesperson has told the Ritzau news agency.

The 84-year-old queen, who has retained her title despite abdicating earlier in 2024, fell on Wednesday evening at Fredensborg Castle north of Copenhagen.

Margrethe is in good condition but will remain at the University Hospital of Copenhagen for observation.

The royal family’s website states that Margrethe’s scheduled attendance at an event on Friday has been cancelled.

At the beginning of the year, the queen handed over the throne to her eldest son, now King Frederik X, 56, after 52 years on the throne.

She explained her abdication by saying that she was concerned about her health.

In 2023, Margrethe underwent major back surgery. The queen has been using a walking stick at public appearances.
