Watch live: Former Google, OpenAI employees testify before Senate on AI regulation

A panel of former Google and OpenAI employees are slated to testify Tuesday on the regulation of artificial intelligence (AI) before a Senate Judiciary subcommittee.

The hearing comes as experts, officials and observers have sounded the alarm around the danger that deepfakes and AI-generated content could pose around the upcoming election — now just 49 days away. Critics have warned that without regulation, AI could spread synthetic content that could stoke disinformation and confuse voters.

Tuesday’s witnesses include:

  • Helen Toner, Director of Strategy and Foundational Research Grants Center for Security and Emerging Technology, Georgetown University
  • Margaret Mitchell, Former Staff Research Scientist, Google AI
  • William Saunders, Former Member of Technical Staff, OpenAI
  • David Evan Harris, Senior Policy Advisor, California Initiative for Technology and Democracy Chancellor’s Public Scholar, UC Berkeley

The hearing is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. EDT.
