Hawthorn star Will Day hoping to return for finals despite nasty injury diagnosis

Hawthorn star Will Day had more scans on his sternum on Monday as he and club count the cost of the brutal hit in Sunday’s win over Richmond.

Day was crunched by teammate Jai Newcombe when the pair both attacked a loose ball during the Hawks’ dominant first quarter.

“He’s in a lot of distress,” Campbell Brown said on Channel 7, later reporting Day was taken to hospital in need of pain relief and scans.

The club champion was cleared of a broken collarbone on Sunday night, but scans on Monday confirmed a partial dislocation of the joint between his sternum and collarbone.

He has been ruled out for this weekend’s match, but is still holding out hope of featuring in the finals should the Hawks make it.

“Definitely (have hope), always look at the positive side and I’ll be hoping I can get back out there,” he told 7NEWS Melbourne on Monday.

Day will see another specialist on Tuesday, but if surgery is required then his season will be over.

It continues a frustrating run for Day, who missed the first six games of the season with a foot injury.

Hawthorn won just one pf those games when Day was sidelined, but then went 11-4 with him in the 15 games before Sunday.

The Hawks play North Melbourne on Saturday, needing to win to secure their spot in the finals.

The likely win will complete a remarkable turnaround for the club after starting the season with five straight losses.

“Would be pretty special, since I’ve been at the club finals hasn’t really been on the cards at all,” Day said.

“We’ve put in a lot of work so we’re really excited about the prospect of it, but obviously another week to go to get it done.”
