Supt. Saurabh Agarwal of Sindhudurg police told BBC Marathi on Tuesday that Lalita Kayi Kumar has now said she was not married and that she was probably suffering from hallucinations when she gave her first statement.

Police said the 50-year-old woman bought locks and chains and allegedly tied herself to the tree because she was stressed as her visa had run out and she was running out of money.

A doctor at the psychiatric hospital where Kumar was admitted said “her condition is improving,” BBC reported.

“She eats, walks and also exercises. She is under treatment and we are also giving her some nutrients that her body was lacking,” Dr. Sanghamitra Phule said.

Kumar was rescued on July 27 after a shepherd found her screaming in a forest in Sindhudurg, about 450 km from Mumbai.

The emaciated woman told the police she had not had any food or water for several days.

She allegedly told police her husband chained her and left her in the forest to “die without food or water,” BBC reported.

Police found a copy of her U.S. passport and other documents linking her to an address in India’s southern Tamil Nadu state, as well as a cellphone, tablet and 31,000 rupees (about $506).
