Irish police question man over woman’s death in County Cork | Ireland

Irish police are questioning a man in his thirties about the death of a woman in County Cork.

The woman was found with serious injuries at a flat in the town of Midleton at about 4.15pm on Friday.

The woman, named locally as Daena Walsh, is believed to be a 27-year-old mother of two who lived in the flat.

She received emergency medical attention at the scene but was pronounced dead a short time later. It is understood she may have been stabbed.

The scene has been sealed off for examination by gardaí, and the local coroner and the state pathologist’s office have been notified.

Firefighters were also called to the scene at the same time because a section of the property was on fire.

Gardaí and firefighters remained in the area and traffic diversions were in place. A family liaison officer had been assigned to support the family.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to contact them, as well as for anyone with camera footage and who may have passed through or close to the area on Friday afternoon to come forward.

A local Sinn Fein TD, Pat Buckley, said people in the area were shocked and saddened by what had happened.

“It has affected the town. Life is very fickle. People can’t understand it. Our hearts go out to the family of this woman,” he said.
