Olympics 2024 LIVE: Results and medal count as Marchand wins historic double gold

Alex Yee wins spectacular gold with unbelievable comeback in the men’s triathlon

Leon Marchand produced fireworks on a historic night in the pool on day five of the Olympics.

An incredible swim in the 200m butterfly to win gold in an Olympic record was then backed up to complete an unprecedented double gold in a single session, producing another Olympic record in the 200m breaststroke, securing his third gold of the Games.

His performance was followed by China’s Pan Zhanle winning the men’s 100m freestyle final in dominant fashion, setting a new world record in the process – the first time a world record has fallen in the pool at these Olympics.

Earlier on Wednesday, Team GB enjoyed a medal rush, starting with the women’s and men’s triathlon events to kick off another busy day at Paris 2024. Alex Yee turned his Tokyo silver into a spectacular Paris gold with a scarcely believable comeback in the men’s triathlon, which had to be postponed yesterday after failing safety tests due to pollution in the River Seine, just after Team GB’s world champion Beth Potter took a gutsy bronze in the women’s triathlon amid treacherous conditions.

Shortly after, the women’s quad sculls rowers added to the GB haul with an incredible comeback of their own to pip the Dutch boat to gold on the line. Meanwhile, in diving, Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix and Lois Toulson won a resilient medal in the women’s 10m platform synchro, coming from behind to win bronze on their final dive, while BMX freestyle star Kieran Reilly secured a stunning silver at Place de la Concorde.

Spanish duo Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz were knocked out in straight sets in the tennis quarter-finals by American pair Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram. Follow all the action, latest results and medals from Paris 2024 in our live blog below.

Olympics 2024: Pan Zhanle shatters world record on extraordinary night of swimming

It was heartbreak for Nandor Nemeth (47.50) in that men’s 100 free, Chalmers (47.48) and Popovici (47.49) leaving him without a medal by the barest of margins.

But they are mere footnotes to a truly incomprehensible night at La Defense Arena, which is bouncing as Leon Marchand steps up to receive a second gold medal of the night.

Olympics 2024: Pan Zhanle shatters world record!

PAN ZHANLE PULVERIZES THE WORLD RECORD! 46.40 seconds! He’s taken four tenths of a second off his own world record and he was accelerating into the wall!

Another simply paradigm-shifting swim. It’s been a difficult Olympics for China’s swimmers, but they have a freestyle superhero who was in a realm all of his own tonight. And he’s only 19! So much for a slow pool…

Kyle Chalmers and David Popovici take silver and bronze, more than a second behind.

Olympics 2024: Swimming

That Katie Ledecky gold is rather handy for the United States in their battle to top the swimming medal table, a developing sub-plot of Paris 2024. Australia have high hopes of winning the most gold medals in the pool for the first time since the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne, and have made a strong start with four to the USA’s two before tonight.

Australia did beat their great rivals on golds at the 2023 Worlds, though the Americans’ preference for listing in terms of number of medals meant that they still claimed victory Stateside.

Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz’s Olympic dream ended to leave uncertain future

Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz’s dreams of an Olympic medal in doubles were ended by a quarter-final loss to American fourth seeds Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram.

The Spanish duo have been one of the star attractions of the tennis event at Roland Garros and another packed crowd cheered them on under the roof on Court Philippe Chatrier.

But this time they met their match as Krajicek and Ram, two of the best doubles players in the game, showed their prowess in the format to claim a 6-2 6-4 victory.

Inexorable. Inevitable. Incomparable. Katie Ledecky wins the women’s 1500m freestyle in a new Olympic record time of 15 min 30.02 sec. The eighth fastest swim in history.

It’s a cracking race behind her, Isobel Gose surging and closing on Anastasiaa Kirpichnikova but unable to haul her in, to the home crowd’s delight.

Olympics 2024: Men’s gymnastics all round final reaction

Joe Fraser, who finished fifth in the men’s gymnastics all-round final, said afterwards: “I’m over the moon. I was reminded earlier that I came 52nd in the Europeans in the all-around four months ago. To finish fifth in an Olympic Games, I couldn’t be prouder.”

He added: “It was all about having fun. I was really disappointed after the team final, I was praying we could do enough, but it wasn’t to be. I just thought I had nothing to lose, I went for everything I wanted to.

“I’m proud and going round with Jake was just a joy. He’s fun, energetic and he’s always so happy. It makes things so much easier. I left it all out there and I’m very proud of it.”

Jake Jarman, who finished seventh in the same competition, said: “From when I knew I’d made the all-around final, I didn’t have any expectations on myself to be in the top three.

“With the scores I produce, it’s still quite far off that top three spot. It was mostly about trying to enjoy the moment and the experience.

“To be in the top group, going around and starting on floor, it’s crazy. It’s an incredible opportunity and I just wanted to soak it all up and have as much fun as I could. I think I did that.”

Four lengths of the pool to be swum, with Katie Ledecky 15 metres clear of the rest. Can Kirpichnikova hold on? Simona Quadarella has upped her strokerate, trying to reel the Frenchwoman in.
