(NewsNation) — Praising his father for his defiant stand after last week’s assassination attempt, Donald Trump Jr. urged the delegates at the Republican National Convention to help return former President Donald Trump to the White House.
“It’s a choice between one team that wants to build this country up, and another that wants to tear this country down,” Trump told the delegates gathered in Milwaukee. “Ultimately, it’s a choice between ‘America last’ and ‘America first.’”
Trump opened his speech by recounting the attempt on his father’s life in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday.
“My father came under literal fire,” he said before praising Trump supporter Corey Comperatore, the retired fire chief who was fatally struck by a bullet intended for the former president.
The younger Trump then began a long, harsh and personal recitation of why President Joe Biden and his fellow Democrats are taking the U.S. in what he believes is the wrong direction.
“We won’t ever forget the lies from left-wing politicians (and) from their allies in the media,” Trump said. “When you hear them in a row, you fully understand the extent they have gone to divide this great nation.”
Trump called Biden’s multi-billion-dollar infrastructure repair legislation known as ‘Build Back Better’ as a different kind of ‘B-B-B.’
“We got Broke Bumbling Biden. Nothing is built, nothing is back, and nothing is better,” he said. “It was just one giant bait-and-switch, and normal Americans are the ones left holding the bag.”
In his harshest words aimed at Biden, Trump asked, “Who is actually running the country, anyway? It’s obviously not Joe Biden! Is it Jill? Is it Hunter? Barack Obama? Maybe it’s the ghost of Cornpop,” referring to the nickname of a nemesis from Biden’s youth in stories the president has often told.
Trump blasted Democratic Party leaders for the direction of the party in the past few years, saying he remembered when he believed that Democrats really wanted what was best for the country, even if their solutions were different.
“You may have disagreed with that party, but at least you could respect it. But this new, extreme Democrat Party, they want us to somehow believe that the only way forward is going backwards: Where hiring decisions are based solely on race; where justice is only for those with the right opinions; where streets are a luxury only for the elite.”
Trump began his speech by giving up a few minutes to his daughter, Kai Madison Trump.
“To me, he’s just a normal grampa,” the 17-year-old said. “I know him for who he is. He’s very caring and loving. He truly wants the best for this country.”
Trump ended his remarks by returning to the assassination attempt, saying he’d never been prouder of his father than in that moment.
“That’s when the world found out that there is tough, and then there is Trump tough. And the good news is: America is Trump tough.”
Trump also praised his father’s running mate, JD Vance, and remarked about their very different backgrounds.
“We grew up worlds apart, yet now we’re both fighting side by side to save the country we love,” Trump said.
