(NewsNation) — Nearly one-third of Americans say they’d only vote for a major office candidate who shares their view on abortions, according to a Gallup poll.
The findings, from Gallup’s Values and Beliefs Poll conducted in May, were released in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court preserving access to the commonly used abortion medication mifepristone.
The poll found that 61% of adults support making mifepristone available as a prescription drug in the country. The level of support is similar to the 63% measured last year and higher than the 50% support recorded in 2000 when the FDA initially approved the pill as a prescription drug.
According to the poll, 64% of women and 58% of men favor mifepristone availability as a prescription drug.
Meanwhile, support varies across political lines, with only 32% of Republicans approving the pill’s availability as a prescription drug compared to 61% of independents and 87% of Democrats.
While mifepristone received federal approval in 2000, the FDA lifted a requirement that the drug be administered to patients in person, opening the way for mail-order prescriptions in 2021.
