Officer stable after shooting incident near Timmins: OPP

An OPP officer is in stable condition after being shot on Wednesday evening during a manhunt near Timmins, Ont.

Provincial police said a man was also in custody following an incident on an island on Night Hawk Lake, east of the northern Ontario city, where police were reportedly searching for a man wanted for questioning in a homicide investigation.

Lucas MacDonald, 43, of Egan Township, was taken into custody following the incident. Police had yet to say whether he had been charged with any crimes.

“There is no further public safety risk related to this incident,” the OPP’s official X account said. “More information will be released as it becomes available.”

The province’s Special Investigations Unit also invoked its mandate after “multiple OPP officers discharged their firearms at a male” in the Night Hawk Lake area.

“The male was not seriously injured,” said the SIU, which investigates officers when there is a serious injury, death, allegation of sexual assault or discharge of a firearm at a person.

CTV Northern News reported that MacDonald was wanted for questioning in the homicide of Marcel Thoma, 30, of Petawawa, who remains were found on May 23 near Shillington, Ont., about 10 km east of Night Hawk Lake.

Thoma had been shot to death, police said.

MacDonald, who was wanted on an unrelated matter, was also being sought by police in the Thoma case as they believed he had information.

“Investigators also believe that he (MacDonald) may be in possession of a firearm and has information regarding the death investigation,” police said on May 28.

“If located, use extreme caution, call police and do not approach.”
