Actress Sophie Turner has often gravitated toward steadfast and fierce women in her work. “I’m always inspired,” she tells The Run-Through over Zoom. “If I have a bad day, I’m like, Bring out your inner Sansa.” She is referring, of course, to Sansa Stark, the steely character she played for many years on the hit series Game of Thrones, but she’s more recently been in character as Joan Hannington for the upcoming series Joan, about the infamous British diamond thief. As much as Sophie draws strength from the women she plays, she also loves the escapist element of acting—the relief that comes from performing an identity so outside of her own world.
It makes sense that Sophie, British Vogue’s June cover star, would occasionally want to break away from reality: between her divorce filings, custody battles, and overtly sexist mom-shaming from the press and the peanut gallery, the past year has been a difficult one. But rather than hide out from it all, Sophie has handled the ordeal with poise, looking steadily ahead to her future with her daughters.
