Popular Japanese restaurant Tetsuya’s to close after 35 years

An iconic Sydney restaurant is closing its doors after 35 years in business.

Tetsuya’s, a Japanese fine-dining restaurant located in Sydney’s CBD, is set to close on July 31, 2024.

“Our plans to relocate Tetsuya’s to a new site after it closes at the end of July have unfortunately not worked out, and I have made the very difficult decision to permanently close the restaurant,” founder and chef Tetsuya Wakuda announced on the restaurant’s Instagram feed.

“We have spent the last 18 months planning the move, and the new restaurant, so this was not an easy decision, but sometimes things just don’t go to plan.”

Wakuda had refurbished the popular restaurant located on a heritage-listed site with decor inspired by traditional Japanese cuisine, and the eponymous eatery became a global food brand.

The chef arrived as a backpacker in Sydney in 1982, then opened Tetsuya’s in 1989 in Rozelle, in Sydney’s Inner West.

He relocated to the restaurant’s current CBD home in a heritage-listed building on Kent St in 2000.

Fans of the venue took to social media to share their disappointment at news of the closure.

“Thanks for all those amazing experiences,” one person said.

“We will miss it!” added another.

“So sad … I’ve been lucky enough to visit five times … the food and service is outstanding,” a third said.
