One thing missing on launch day from the heavily anticipated release? A golf shirt in Woods’ trademark Sunday red colour. That’s right, a rather important garment in the 15-time major champ’s new line isn’t for sale and appears to be still listed as “coming soon” on the new Sun Day Red website.

That didn’t stop the 48-year-old golf star from appearing on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to explain the origin story of his famous colour scheme.

“The red story is actually a good one. It comes from my mom,” he said. “My mom thought it was, being a Capricorn, whatever, it was power colour, some B.S. like that. I end up wearing red and winning some junior golf tournaments. So to spite her, I wore blue and I did not win those tournaments, so mama’s always right.”

Wearing a blue hoodie on the talk show, Woods was asked why he chose the name Sun Day Red.

“Uh, maybe because I’ve won a few tournaments on Sunday and wearing red,” he answered.

Fallon described Woods’ new clothing line as an “ath-luxury” brand, and judging by the prices, it’s a fitting description. Golf shirts range from C$160-$240 and T-shirts begin at $90. Golf hats range from $60-$70 and the most affordable items available are golf gloves at $60 and ball markers at $65.

Woods ended his iconic business relationship with Nike earlier in 2024 after 27 years with the brand. Sun Day Red is a collaboration with Taylormade and he first wore the new gear in February at his Genesis Invitational PGA Tour event in California.

Woods also joked with Fallon about a handshake with the retiring Verne Lundquist at last month’s Masters that turned into a viral meme. Woods shook hands with the broadcasting legend, who was hidden from cameras by a large tree, on the 16th hole on Sunday.

“There was a picture of you, I think it was the last day you were playing,” Fallon began. “And it went viral on the internet. I don’t know if you saw this. It’s you, uh, shaking hands with a tree.”

“I don’t know if you saw these,” Fallon asked of the memes.

“No, what happened?” Woods said.

Fallon proceeded to show a few of the viral gags, before the pair got into the new clothing line.

Woods’ next tournament is expected to be the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Kentucky later this month.
