Doctor shares the three things she would never let her child do

A doctor and longevity expert has revealed the three things she would never let her child do.

Dr Poonam Desai frequently shares videos to her Instagram page, where she offers medical advice and healthy tips and tricks for kids.

In a recent video, she said that, as a doctor and a mum, there were three things she would always ban.

The first is an innocent habit that many people do — walking in the house with shoes on.

“(But my family) tend to take our shoes off right at the door and not bring our dirty shoes inside the home,” she said in the video.

“This is because shoes can carry dirt, feces, mould and pesticides.”

She says she prefers shoes off in the home and that means teaching her child “no shoes in the house”.

The second thing Dr Desai says she would never let her child do is “eating food out of heated plastic containers”.

“We don’t put our plastic Tupperware in the microwave and eat food out of it,” she said.

“The reason is it can leech microplastics which are endocrine disruptors.”

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are natural or human-made chemicals that may mimic, block, or interfere with the body’s hormones.

The last thing the doctor mentions is “not using fragranced laundry detergent”.

“I tend to opt for fragrance-free laundry detergent and fragrance-free lotions,” she said.

“They contain phthalates, which is what they what add fragrance to products and make them more pliable which may interfere with hormone production.”

People in the comments praised the doctor’s tips and tricks and said they would definitely be following them in the future.

“I do exactly the same,” said one.

“Thanks for the tips on plastics and fragrances,” added another.

“Great stuff doctor,” said a third.

Meanwhile, a paramedic recently shared the Easter foods that are safe for your child and the surprising ones that aren’t.

First on the list of foods to be wary of is the cult family favourite, Cream Eggs.

Although they are able to be squished and so can fit down tiny airways, they are also sticky on the inside — making them difficult for kids to swallow.

Next, Nikki banned marshmallows, because they have a “sticky consistency and the shape and size can block children’s airways”.

Other foods she recommends prohibiting include tiny Easter eggs, because their “shape and size can block the airway”, and hot cross buns, because “sultanas are a choking hazard”.

It’s not all gloom.

Nikki says some foods don’t pose a risk, including large hollow Easter eggs, which can be broken into smaller pieces.

“I love this page so much,” one said of her advice.

“This is so good to know,” said another.
