Trump campaign to host massive fundraiser at Mar-a-Largo

(NewsNation) — Former President Donald Trump’s team is prepping for a massive fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago this weekend. His campaign is working to beat President Joe Biden’s $26 million raised from his star-studded New York City fundraiser last week.

The Republican National Committee said it has already raised over $65 million in March, but Trump hopes to accrue $33 million more to his campaign at Saturday’s fundraiser.

On Friday, Trump held another fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago for the nonprofit BORDER911, focusing on the immigration crisis at the southern border. Trump has previously vocalized support for the foundation, but the group itself has run into some controversy because as a 501c3 nonprofit, it’s not supposed to support or oppose specific candidates.

However, the nonprofit says it focuses on bringing awareness to the border.

Nevertheless, the border is an issue the former president has hammered on the campaign trail. Earlier this week, Trump kept the issue at the top of voter minds in Michigan and Wisconsin.

“There is a problem. Everybody knows it. Even our president knows it, but he’s doing nothing about it,” Michigan voter Eric Phillips said. “Now, there are people who want to be a part of America but I think they should come over here like they’re supposed to and not just trample across the border.”

Immigration has quickly become a top issue in the 2024 presidential race. Gallup polling found that 28% of voters say it’s their top issue overall, the second being the government and its poor leadership. The economy was marked voters’ third top issue.

Even if Trump’s fundraiser brings in the desired $33 million, his campaign team still has work to do to catch up to Biden as his war chest currently sits at $155 million.
