While millions may have watched the video of Catherine, the Princess of Wales, sharing news of her cancer diagnosis, a royal photographer has identified an easy-to-miss detail in the background.
On Friday, after weeks of frenzied speculation on social media about her health and well-being, Kate released a candid video message.

In it, she revealed she is undergoing chemotherapy for cancer following major abdominal surgery. The 42-year-old said the cancer discovery was a “huge shock” and she was now in the early stages of preventative chemotherapy.
In the two-minute video, Kate is seated on a wooden bench in front of a backdrop of golden daffodils – which is not only Wales’ national flower but a “flower of hope” long associated with cancer patients and survivors, as noted by The Sun’s royal photographer Arthur Edwards.
“I wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you, personally, for all the wonderful messages of support and for your understanding whilst I have been recovering from surgery,” she started the message.
“It has been an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family, but I’ve had a fantastic medical team who have taken great care of me, for which I am so grateful.”
The princess said it had taken her time to “explain everything” to her three children, George, Charlotte and Louis, to “reassure them that I am going to be okay”.
“As I have said to them; I am well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal; in my mind, body and spirits,” she said.
She finished the video by speaking directly to those affected by cancer: “Please do not lose faith or hope. You are not alone.”
Edwards wrote that he believes she “used daffodils to symbolise that, like winter turning to spring, there are better times ahead”.
Until Friday, officials had only said Kate’s surgery in January was successful and recuperation would keep the princess away from public duties until April.
This sparked a flurry of rumour-mongering about the “missing” future queen, compounded after Kate acknowledged that she altered an official photo released to mark Mother’s Day in the UK earlier this month.
The photo, meant to reassure the public, triggered a backlash after The Associated Press and other news agencies retracted it over manipulation concerns.
