A rookie police officer has been hailed a hero for pulling a woman from a sinking car after she crashed into a lagoon in Sydney’s north early Sunday.
The 60-year-old driver’s VW Golf sedan was travelling on Pittwater Rd when it crashed through bushes and into at Dee Why Lagoon, entering the water just after 12.30am.
She was still inside the partially submerged vehicle when NSW Police probationary constable Kiesha McJannet arrived at the scene and sprung into action.

McJannet “entered the water and managed to free the woman from the car, which was quickly taking on water,” NSW Police said in a statement.
Shortly after the woman was rescued, the car “became fully submerged,” police said.
Northern Beaches Police Area Command duty officer Adrian De Visser commended the efforts of McJannet, who only joined the force last June.
“Her selfless actions of entering the water and saving a woman from a precarious position is deserving of praise,” he said.
The driver was taken to Northern Beaches Hospital for observation. Salvage crews will try to pull the vehicle out of the lagoon later on Sunday.
