TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Two Holland America Line crew members were killed in an “onboard incident” on Friday,” according to the cruise line.
Holland America said the two crew members died after there was an incident in an engineering space on the Nieuw Amsterdam while the ship was docked in Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas.
Officials said authorities were notified and the cause of the incident is under investigation.
“All of us at Holland America Line are deeply saddened by this incident and our thoughts and prayers are with our team members’ families at this difficult time. The safety, security and welfare of all guests and crew are the company’s absolute priority. We are offering counseling services to team members who may have been affected by this incident,” the cruise line said in a statement.
According to CruiseMapper, the Nieuw Amsterdam departed on a week-long cruise from Fort Lauderdale on Saturday, March 16. The ship was docked at Half Moon Cay, Carnival Cruise Line’s private island on Friday. The ship returned to Fort Lauderdale on Saturday, March 23.
