Trump, Biden continue path to nomination. Watch results come in

(NewsNation) — Voters in four states will turn out to support their preferred candidate in a night of voting that could clinch party nominations for President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump.

Trump rose to the top of the GOP field early on and maintained his lead, outlasting numerous other candidates, even as he has faced multiple legal challenges that are expected to continue through the court system throughout the election year. Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley was the last to drop out of the race, ceding the field to Trump as the GOP’s presumptive nominee.

On the Democratic side, President Joe Biden has faced few challengers, with Rep. Dean Phillips, D-Minn., suspending his campaign against Biden most recently, though long-shot candidate Jason Palmer picked up three delegates from voters in American Samoa. Biden also faces a movement of voters choosing “uncommitted” in an effort to send delegates to the convention who are not bound to vote for a specific candidate.

To win the GOP nomination, Trump will need 1,215 delegates, while Biden needs 1,968 for the Democratic nomination. As voters in Washington, Mississippi, Georgia, Hawaii and the Mariana Islands turn out, there will be 161 Republican delegates and 254 delegates available.

Trump currently has 1,077 delegates and Biden 1,867, which means tonight could give both contenders the nomination for their respective parties.
