Oil sheen spotted off LA coast after suspected platform spill

NewsNation affiliate KTLA’s Sky5 spotted a sheen off the coast of Huntington Beach Friday morning following reports of a possible oil spill.

The incident was initially announced shortly after 8 a.m. by Orange County Supervisor Katrina Foley on X, formerly Twitter.

An emergency response team was sent to investigate reports of a possible spill from an oil platform off the coast, Foley said.

“Our county teams and coast guard are heading out now to investigate. I’ll keep you updated,” Foley said in her post.

The City of Huntington Beach posted that a Marine Safety Division had not yet seen anything to substantiate the reports as of 9:23 a.m. but said the Coast Guard was evaluating areas further off the coastline.

Sky5 arrived above the scene a short time later and found a miles-long oil sheen in the water near where a Coast Guard ship was investigating.
