Jennifer Lawrence has a new favorite accessory.
The Oscar winner was photographed today wearing a modest beige suit jacket contrasted with a sexy black leather maxi skirt. She accessorized with a pair of black boots and a handbag to match. But the real standout of Lawrence’s outfit was her coordinating headscarf, draped over her head and tied under her chin like a babushka. (Or, as one of my colleagues pointed out, the late Queen Elizabeth II.) Of course, it’s probably more likely that Lawrence was going for Old Hollywood glamour, á là Audrey Hepburn, or perhaps a Jackie O type.
The Babushka trend had a moment in 2019, when A$AP Rocky released his song “Babushka Boi,” and began rocking the titular scarf. Celebrities including Kendall Jenner, Chloë Sevigny, Marc Jacobs, and Imaan Hamaan all followed suit.
This is the second time this week Lawrence has tried out a head covering. Yesterday, she wrapped herself in a black scarf and shielded much of her face with oversized sunglasses, which my colleague deemed an “anti-paparazzi” device.
While Lawrence is looking undeniably chic in this Thelma & Louise-esque look, it’s worth noting that she’s been wearing these looks in a country with restrictive policies and disproving attitudes toward head coverings—specifically on Muslim women. Over the past several years, France has criminalized niqabs, banned abayas in schools and hijabs in athletics—including French hijabis who will compete at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Obviously, it’s not like Lawrence herself drafted these edicts, but these days, fashion can serve as a powerful tool in our arsenals.
