Dodgers fan favorite breaks news of his return

Utilityman Enrique Hernandez took to social media on Monday to break news of his return to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

According to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, Hernandez is rejoining the Dodgers on a one-year deal.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported that Los Angeles had made a trade with the Minnesota Twins on Monday afternoon, which led to the re-signing of Hernandez.

The 32-year-old has never put up gaudy stats in his 10-year career but has excelled as an infielder and outfielder, particularly across his six-plus seasons with the Dodgers.

Hernandez was selected in the sixth round of the 2009 MLB June Amateur Draft by the Houston Astros and made his big-league debut in 2014 with the club.

After splitting 2014 between the Astros and Miami Marlins, Hernandez was traded to Los Angeles in a six-player deal that saw three-time All-Star pitcher Dan Haren and two-time All-Star speedster Dee Strange-Gordon land in South Beach.

His first stint with the Dodgers lasted from 2015-2020 and was highlighted by the team’s World Series title in the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign.

Hernandez had one of the best playoff games in franchise history during Game 5 of the 2017 NLCS against the Chicago Cubs, finishing 3-for-4 with three home runs (including a grand slam) and seven RBI.

His performance propelled Los Angeles to an 11-1 victory and first NL pennant since 1988.

Hernandez signed with the Boston Red Sox in February 2021 and had one of the best regular seasons of his career.

The San Juan, Puerto Rico native finished the year with 20 home runs, 60 RBI and career highs in runs scored (84), hits (127), doubles (35), walks (61) and total bases (228), among other categories.

Hernandez had a big 2021 postseason for Boston as well, going 20-for-49 with five home runs, nine RBI and eight runs scored in 11 games as the Red Sox advanced to the ALCS.

He was traded back to the Dodgers in July 2023 and became a free agent this offseason.
