The attack was sudden and brutal, with the would-be assassin blasting away with two pistols.

Security cameras showed the target scramble away from his car and despite being wounded in the head and chest, Koloamatangi survived.

Drug and Firearms Squad Commander John Watson said the objective was clear.

“There’s no question at all in our minds that they were intent on trying to murder this person,” Watson said.

He added: “The number of shots, the time of day, it’s horrendous.”

Koloamatangi, who survived another shooting in Merrylands in 2020, has recovered and police have now upped their search for suspects.

“We’re appealing to anyone that may have seen anyone that doesn’t live in building, belong in the building, acting suspicious,” Watson said.

Shortly after the ambush, the gunman’s Mercedes crashed into a house in Kingsgrove before bursting into flames.

A Mazda involved in the incident was torched in Birrong and a BMW, also involved, was destroyed in Berala.

Another getaway car was found burning in Agnes Banks and a week later a Nissan was set alight in West Pennant Hills.

Detectives said this attack was very well planned, with cars stolen and stashed away several weeks before.

It’s believed at least seven people were involved.

“The cars we know were driving in convoy,” Watson said.

Gangland target

It’s believed Koloamatang was targeted for his alleged role in organised crime, but it’s not clear yet why his attackers wanted him dead.

He has not given police any information.
