Disney+ prices to increase as streaming service rolls out new premium subscription tier

Disney+ users will soon have to fork out more for their subscriptions as the streaming service hikes its prices in coming weeks.

The company will bump up prices for Disney+ users by 29 per cent from March 5 as they introduce a new subscription option.

The streaming service offers movies and hit TV shows such as The Simpsons and The Kardashians, as well as original shows including The Mandalorian and Only Murders in the Building.

Currently, customers pay $13.99 a month or $139.99 a year for a standard subscription that allows up to 4K resolution streaming with HDR support on up to four devices at once.

Come March, the standard plan is getting a shake-up and will only offer up to 1080p Full-HD video on two devices at once.

Customers who want to keep 4K resolution and four devices will have to pay $17.99 a month or $179.99 a year under the new Disney+ premium plan — a 29 per cent increase on the standard plan.

The same goes for New Zealand users, with the standard subscription staying at $NZD14.99 or the new premium option for $NZD18.99.

Ad-free streaming will remain across both tiers.

Disney says the change will provide consumers with “greater choice and value” via a multi-tiered approach.

Until March 4, new, eligible returning and existing monthly subscribers have the chance to lock in the new premium plan at a standard price for one year.

The change brings the streaming service in line with other providers, with Netflix, Stan and Binge all offering tiered subscription plans.
