Royal news – live: Queen Camilla visits King Charles after prostate surgery as Kate continues recovery

The Queen has visited the King as he remains in hospital for a second day after undergoing a procedure for an enlarged prostate.

Camilla arrived at the London Clinic in central London in a black Audi car at noon on Saturday.

Wearing a white blouse and black jumper, she left around three hours later.

It is the same hospital where the Princess of Wales is being cared for following abdominal surgery.

King Charles is delighted that news of his treatment for an enlarged prostate is raising public awareness of the health issue, Buckingham Palace said on Friday, confirming he had been admitted to hospital for scheduled treatment.

“His Majesty would like to thank all those who have sent their good wishes over the past week and is delighted to learn that his diagnosis is having a positive impact on public health awareness,” the palace said in a statement.

“I’m 64 and just getting started,” wrote Sarah, Duchess of York, to her social media followers on New Year’s Day. Her words captioned a photograph of her swathed in emerald silk and resting on her bed – defiant and understandably so given the highs and lows of 2023.

The year when she not only was diagnosed and treated for breast cancer (her reconstructed left breast is affectionately named Derek), but also published a second bestselling novel and accompanied the Royal family on their Christmas Day Sandringham walkabout for the first time in nearly 30 years. “I have more stories to tell,” she assured her 680,000 followers.

One in every three men over the age of 50 will have symptoms of an enlarged prostate, which include needing to visit the toilet more frequently, with more urgency, and difficulty emptying the bladder.

An enlarged prostate, known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, does not usually pose a serious threat to health, and it is not cancer.

But patients may need to have several tests for the condition to rule out the possibility they have another illness with similar symptoms, such as prostate cancer.

Surgery is usually only recommended for moderate to severe symptoms that have not responded to medicine, the NHS website says.

Treatment can include a number of procedures, including removing part of the prostate gland with a laser, water ablation using the pressure of the water to destroy prostate tissue, or urethral lift implants, which hold the enlarged prostate away from the urethra so it is not blocked.

Other options include a prostate artery embolisation, during which tiny plastic particles are injected into blood vessels to shrink the prostate gland by reducing its blood supply.

The NHS has seen a massive surge in people looking for information on melanoma skin cancer after Sarah, Duchess of York, was diagnosed with the disease.

NHS England said there was one visit every 13 seconds to the NHS website for information on melanoma in the two days following the announcement on Sunday.

The Queen has left The London Clinic after visiting the King, who remains in hospital after receiving treatment for an enlarged prostate.

Camilla arrived at the hospital at noon and stayed for around three hours.

She also visited on Friday. Reports suggest the King could also spend Saturday night at the central London clinic.

The Queen appeared to be in good spirits as she smiled at reporters while leaving the hospital where the King is being treated for an enlarged prostate.

Camilla did not answer any questions as she got into the back seat of a waiting car at 3.10pm on Friday.
