After playing for three teams last season, right-handed starter Lucas Giolito has agreed to a two-year, $38.5 million deal with the Boston Red Sox, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported Friday.
The deal includes an opt-out after the first season.
The Chicago White Sox traded Giolito to the Los Angeles Angels in July, but the latter team went into sell-off mode after he made six starts for the squad. The Cleveland Guardians then claimed Giolito off waivers on Aug. 31.
Giolito was 8-15 with a 4.88 ERA in 33 combined starts for the three teams. He had a 6.89 ERA with the Angels and a 7.04 ERA in six starts for the Guardians.
For his career, Giolito is 61-62 with a 4.43 ERA in 180 appearances (178 starts).
The Washington Nationals picked Giolito 16th overall in the 2012 MLB Draft. He made his major-league debut with the Nationals in 2016 and was traded to the White Sox after that season.
Giolito was an AL all-star in 2019 and pitched a no-hitter with the White Sox against the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2020.
