3 shot, 5 in custody following Philadelphia shooting

(NewsNation) — Police in Philadelphia responded to a shooting situation near an event marking the end of Ramadan.

According to police, three people were injured with around 30 shots fired. Authorities described the shooting as a dispute between two groups and indicated it was not directly related to the celebration. Around 1,000 people were gathered to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Police confirmed multiple weapons were recovered and five people are in custody, including one 15-year-old who was shot by a responding officer in the shoulder and leg and is in stable condition. Among the five, four were minors, and one was an adult.

Authorities set up a reunification center at the Clara Muhammad School for families and children who were separated as people fled the scene.

Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel confirmed that during the law enforcement response, a police vehicle struck a young child, who suffered a fractured leg.

Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., urged people to stay safe and listen to first responders.

“My office has been in touch with local officials on the shooting at a Eid al-Fitr event in Philadelphia. As we gather more details, I urge everyone to stay safe and listen to law enforcement,” he said.

Rep. Chrissy Houlahan, D-Pa., responded with a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, on the situation.

“I am heartbroken to hear of a shooting that injured multiple people in West Philadelphia, where so many were celebrating Eid al-Fitr. I’m thankful for our first responders who are on the scene assisting those in need. This is an ongoing situation, & I will continue to monitor it,” she wrote.

The FBI has offered assistance and sent local personnel to the scene to help police and first responders.
