(NewsNation) — Someone in New Jersey is waking up a billionaire and snapping an epic streak of lottery losses. The $1.13 billion prize is the eighth biggest in U.S. lottery history.
Tuesday night’s winning Mega Millions numbers were 7, 11, 22, 29, 38 and 4. The win in New Jersey broke a string of 30 straight drawings without a winner.
This is somewhat by design, as Mega Millions and Powerball have added possible winning numbers to plummet the odds anyone wins the jackpot.
If you missed out on Tuesday’s jackpot, there’s another chance at a windfall Wednesday night. The Powerball drawing is for an estimated $865 million.
The odds of winning the Powerball are 1 in 292.2 million.
“There is strategy in the sense that if you avoid numbers that most people tend to play numbers that are in visual patterns or sequences, or a lot of people like to play anniversaries and birthdays,” said Larry Lesser, a University of Texas at El Paso math professor. “That’s fine, but that means you’re not getting numbers in the 40s and 50s and 60s, so you’re leaving all those numbers out. If you play where fewer people are playing then you’re more likely to get a bigger share of the jackpot, if you win the jackpot.”
