Wake Forest defeats Syracuse 40-37 in OT on Perry TD

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — A.T. Perry caught a 22-yard pass from Sam Hartman in the left corner of the end zone, his third touchdown of the game, and No. 19 Wake Forest rallied to defeat Syracuse 40-37 in overtime Saturday.

A 38-yard field goal by Andre Szmyt gave Syracuse (3-3, 0-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) a 37-34 lead on its first possession in overtime, but the Demon Deacons (6-0, 4-0) scored six plays later to start 6-0 for the first time since 1944.

Sean Tucker scored on a 28-yard pass from Garrett Shrader with 21 seconds to go in regulation to cap a 94-yard drive and tie the game at 34 after the Demon Deacons had taken a 34-27 lead just three minutes earlier on a 10-yard run by Christian Beal-Smith.

The Orange held a 21-10 lead with 6:49 to go in the second quarter. A 1-yard run by Hartman made it 21-17 at the half.

A 40-yard field goal by Nick Sciba brought the Demon Deacons to within a point, and a 69-yard pass play from Hartman to Perry, his second score of the game, gave Wake a 26-21 lead late in the third quarter.

Syracuse gained a 27-26 lead late in the third quarter on 14-yard score by Tucker. Szmyt missed a 45-yard field goal attempt with under 10 minutes to go that would have extended the Orange’s lead to four.

Beal-Smith’s score capped an 11-play drive with 3:28 to go in the game.

Hartman was 19 of 32 for 330 yards and three touchdowns passing in addition to his 1-yard score on the ground. Perry caught touchdown passes of 46, 69 and 22 yards.

Shrader was 15 of 27 for 160 yards and two touchdowns and also rushed for 178 yards. Tucker had 153 yards on the ground, his fourth consecutive game with more than 100 yards.

POLL IMPLICATIONS: Wake should maintain its Top 25 ranking despite struggling against Syracuse.

Wake Forest: The Demon Deacons were challenged throughout but made plays when they had to.

Syracuse: The Orange showed they could hang with a Top 25 team. Shrader is getting more comfortable in the offense and the defense will keep Syracuse in most games.

Wake Forest has a bye week before traveling to West Point to play Army on Oct. 23.

Syracuse hosts Clemson on Friday night.
