Vogue Spends 24 Hours With Rita Ora and Taika Waititi in Düsseldorf

Earlier this month, Taika Waititi and Rita Ora were the hosts of the MTV European Music Awards in Düsseldorf, Germany—and while you’d think that the couple would be busy enough with their live hosting obligations that week, they also squeezed in a full day with Vogue in the European city just ahead of it. On our eventful agenda? A visit with the mayor, fashion fittings, and a taste of the local cuisine, of course.

Waititi and Ora started their morning with a visit to Düsseldorf mayor Stephan Keller’s office at Old Town Hall. “Has anyone ever said that you look like Bryan Cranston,” Waititi told Keller upon meeting. Then, the pair signed the city’s “golden book,” which has also been signed by prominent visitors such as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

After receiving the honor, they headed back to their hotel, where Ora began fittings for the MTV Awards with stylist Tom Eerebout. She had a staggering 12 looks in total for the show. “It’s live TV, so you have about 60 seconds to change,” said Ora. “It’s going to be really tight.” Ora and Eerebout tried on looks including a custom Diesel look by Glenn Martens, a Moschino suit, and an archival Elie Saab dress with a special backstory. “It was worn by Whitney Houston at the World Music Awards in 2004,” says Eerebout. As Ora tried it on, she said, “I can feel her majorness and her iconicness.”

Waititi and Ora then hit the town for dinner. “[When traveling,] we like to try all the foods from that area,” said Waititi. “I like to google where Anthony Bourdain has been,” added Ora. First, they stopped for a slice of pizza, then indulged in more fare at Im Goldenen Kessel, the oldest brewery in Dusseldorf. During dinner, the couple talked about how they first met. “We had known each other for years,” said Waititi, while Ora added, “It was just a natural thing. We were in Australia doing two separate jobs, and we didn’t know that many people in Australia, so we hung out.”

After dessert, it was back to the hotel, where they presumably rested up before hosting the MTV Awards the next day in style. As for what’s next for the busy duo? Waititi will release his new film, Next Goal Wins, in the new year, which he wrote, directed, and produced based on the 2015 documentary of the same name; Ora, meanwhile, is set to release her third album.
