Glass half full? These days Jonathan Simkhai’s cup runneth over. “It’s a nice moment for fashion. It’s kind of the moment that I feel like I’ve waited 10 years for,” he said on a call. “It’s the first time I really feel like maybe I chose the right industry.”
Having launched his brand in 2010, on the heels of the economic crisis, the designer had to take it slow and steady. Now, with pandemic restrictions lifting, Simkhai feels a corner has been turned, business and otherwise. And what better way to herald a new day than with a new dress?
Simkhai’s putting his money on the maxi, a silhouette that can segue from barbecue to big night out. He offers a ribbed-knit version with a twisted fabric detail that frames skin-revealing cutouts; a rosy slip style featuring a lacy built-in bra; and a white pleated sheath.
As this pre-fall collection is tightly edited, it feels more about pieces than a narrative—but the focus is on the body, and the mood is definitely upbeat.
